This website describes the history of the word “anthropocene.” There is wide debate over if they can truly call this time period different from the holocene because scientists aren’t sure when this human impact started. In the end it doesn’t matter when it started, it’s the idea that humans have had such a large impact that we’ve entered a new era. This puts perspective on how much destruction humans have caused due to their belief that the earth was made for their usage.

This website describes the transition from sharks as the top predators to humans as the top predators. They exemplify this through the new trend “shark finning;” the process of cutting off a shark’s dorsal fin and throwing the still-living body back into the ocean. This trend is effecting an entire eco-system for  the sole purpose of profit. A living shark in the wild, throughout it’s lifetime, yields ecosystem benefits worth $1.6 million, whereas the shark fin is worth $200. Human’s selfish desires and immediate gratification surpass logic.

This website dismisses the belief that humans are invincible. They use factual reasoning to explain that humans will go extinct just like every other species. There’s strong evidence leading to the belief that human impacts are effecting species extinction rates; once being 30,000 per year they now have sky rocketed to 140,000 per year. Humans have had a massive global effect in a very short time frame when compared to the history of the world, yet arrogance and psychological denial allows humans to ignore this obvious fact. This website is significant because it exemplifies why it’s dangerous for humans to see themselves as the center of the Earth.
